Tripura
43 destinations
Tripura is India's third smallest state, surrounded on three sides by Bangladesh with a narrow land connection to the rest of India through Assam. Despite its size, it has an unusually rich heritage: Unakoti holds rock carvings of over a million Hindu and Buddhist figures from the 7th to 12th centuries, making it one of the most significant archaeological sites in eastern India. Neermahal is a mid-lake palace built by the Maharaja in 1930, the only royal water palace in eastern India. The Tripura Sundari temple at Udaipur is one of India's 51 Shakti Peethas.

Tripura Travel: Common Questions
- What is Tripura famous for?
- Tripura is famous for Unakoti (a complex of 7th-12th century rock-carved Hindu and Buddhist figures, one of the largest archaeological sites in eastern India), Neermahal (the only royal water palace in eastern India, built in 1930), Ujjayanta Palace (now the state museum in Agartala), and the Tripura Sundari temple at Udaipur (one of India's 51 Shakti Peethas).
- Do I need an Inner Line Permit to visit Tripura?
- No. Tripura does not require an Inner Line Permit for Indian or foreign nationals. Travel within the state is unrestricted.
- What is the best time to visit Tripura?
- October to March is the best time to visit Tripura, when temperatures are pleasant (15-25°C) and rainfall is minimal. The Kharchi Puja festival in July and the Diwali celebrations bring cultural events, but the monsoon heat and humidity make sightseeing less comfortable.
- How do I get to Tripura?
- Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala (IXA) has direct flights from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, and other cities. Agartala is also connected by train to Kolkata via the Agartala-Kolkata Express. By road, Agartala is 590 km from Guwahati (about 12 hours). A land crossing to Bangladesh is also possible at Akhaura.
