51 destinations
Sikkim is the smallest of the eight northeast states, flanked by Nepal, China, and Bhutan in the eastern Himalayas. Khangchendzonga, at 8,586 metres the third highest peak in the world, dominates the western skyline. The state has more bird species per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in India and is the first fully organic state in the country. Gangtok sits at 1,650 metres and connects to high-altitude attractions like Tsomgo Lake (3,753 m) and Nathula Pass (4,310 m) at the China border.
No ILP is required for Sikkim. A Protected Area Permit (PAP) is required to visit restricted border areas such as Nathula Pass and Gurudongmar Lake.

Sikkim Travel: Common Questions
- What is Sikkim famous for?
- Sikkim is famous for Khangchendzonga (the world's third highest peak), Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass near the China border, Rumtek Monastery (one of the most important Kagyu Buddhist monasteries), the Dzongri-Goecha La Himalayan trek, and the rhododendron forests of Yumthang Valley. It is India's first fully organic state.
- Do I need a permit to visit Sikkim?
- No Inner Line Permit is required for Sikkim. However, a Protected Area Permit (PAP) is required to visit restricted areas near the Chinese border, including Nathula Pass, Gurudongmar Lake, and certain parts of North Sikkim. These permits are arranged through registered tour operators in Gangtok and usually processed within 24 hours.
- What is the best time to visit Sikkim?
- March to May is the best time for rhododendrons and clear mountain views. October to December brings crisp weather and excellent visibility after the monsoon. The Dzongri-Goecha La trek is best done in April-May or October-November. Heavy snowfall closes high-altitude roads between January and February.
- How do I get to Sikkim?
- The nearest airport is Pakyong Airport (PYG), about 30 km from Gangtok, with connections to Kolkata. Most travellers fly to Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal (120 km from Gangtok) and take a 3-4 hour taxi. The closest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), also 120 km away.
