The honest version
Three hours each way from Shillong. Go between November and March or the river will not look like the photographs. Confirm the boat price and duration before you get in.
Mawlynnong is fine. It is not the reason to make this drive.
When the water is clear
November to March. In the dry season the Umngot at Dawki is genuinely, improbably clear, and boats appear to float on air.
After rain it is milky brown. Not slightly less clear: a different river. Every viral photograph of Dawki was taken in the dry season and a great many people arrive in July having seen them.
The boat
Priced per boat for a set duration, with rates set locally rather than by the operator you happen to speak to.
Agree three things before stepping in: the price, how long, and how many people. The usual complaint is a ride that ends sooner than expected, and it is avoidable.
Life jackets. Ask for them. They are not always offered.
Mawlynnong
Marketed as the cleanest village in Asia, on the strength of an old magazine citation that has been repeated ever since.
It is clean, it is pleasant, there is a bamboo skywalk and a small entry fee, and it has been thoroughly shaped by being visited. Whether that bothers you is a matter of taste.
Our position: worth the stop if you are already driving past. Not worth the drive alone. A tour operator who sells this as a day trip cannot say that, which is roughly the point.
The living root bridge at Riwai
A short walk from Mawlynnong, and much easier to reach than the Nongriat double decker.
If you want to see a root bridge without a 3,000 step descent, this is the one. It is smaller and less dramatic, and it is a genuine root bridge rather than a consolation.

Leaving at nine instead of seven means arriving at the river with the crowds and getting back after dark. The road is not one to drive at night.
Border note
Dawki sits on the Bangladesh border and the crossing is visible from the river. Stay on the Indian side unless you have the paperwork, which is not a joke: the border is unmarked in places along the water.

Prices here are placeholders until checked in person. The boat rate in particular is quoted at wildly different levels across the internet, which is exactly why one checked figure with a date attached is worth publishing.
