About Haflong Lake
Haflong Lake is the defining feature of Haflong, Assam’s only hill station and headquarters of Dima Hasao district. The lake sits just below the main market ridge at approximately 680 metres, covering around 2.5 sq km at its fullest. It is fed by hill streams and surrounded by pine and broadleaf forest, with forested slopes rising on three sides.
What to Do
Pedal boating is the primary lake activity, available during daylight hours at nominal rates. Early morning, before the mist clears from the surrounding hills, is the best time to be on the water. Late afternoon light on the lake is also good.
Eat Street Haflong opened in December 2024 on the lakeside. Developed by the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, this is a lakeside food and leisure strip with food stalls, a lit walkway, murals depicting Dimasa tribal heritage, a selfie point, and a fishing area. It is the first genuinely social gathering space in Haflong, now the main evening destination for locals and tourists alike.
Best Time to Visit
October to March. The lake and surrounding hills are clearest in these months. The annual Haflong Festival in October brings Dimasa, Zeme Naga, and Hmar cultural performances to the town.
How to Reach
New Haflong Railway Station, about 3 km from the lake, is served by the twice-weekly Guwahati-New Haflong Vistadome train (Wednesdays and Saturdays). The lake is walkable from the main market. From Silchar (150 km), the road through the Barail hills takes 3-4 hours. Verify conditions before travel, as the NH-27 section is prone to landslides particularly June-September.
