Cherry Blossom Season in Shillong: When to Go and Where to Look

The thing everyone gets wrong

Shillong’s cherry blossoms are in November. Not spring.

The tree is Prunus cerasoides, the wild Himalayan cherry, which flowers in autumn. It is a different species from the Japanese Prunus serrulata that everyone pictures, and booking a spring trip to see Shillong’s blossoms is a mistake made every single year.

When, exactly

Usually the first half of November, and the peak shifts by a week or more depending on the season.

The bloom lasts roughly two weeks from opening to drop, so a trip booked for a fixed week months ahead is a gamble. Booking flexible accommodation is worth more than booking early.

Where to look

It is not one park. The trees are distributed through the town and the surrounding hills.

  • Ward’s Lake and the area around it
  • Polo Ground
  • Shillong Golf Course, which has some of the best stands
  • Along the roads through the upper parts of town
  • Umiam Lake road, on the way in from Guwahati

The festival

The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival runs during the bloom. It is a music and food festival held at blossom time rather than a flower-viewing event, and people arrive expecting the second.

Accommodation prices rise sharply during festival week and rooms genuinely sell out.

Going for the flowers, not the festival

If the blossoms are the point, consider the week either side of the festival. Same trees, far fewer people, and cheaper rooms.

That is the opposite of the advice every listicle gives, and it is what we would actually do.

What else November gives you

November is close to the best month in Meghalaya generally. Post-monsoon, so the waterfalls still run, the Umngot at Dawki has usually cleared, and the roads are reliable.

That combination is why November is worth the higher prices even setting the blossoms aside. See Shillong to Dawki and Mawlynnong and the Meghalaya 5 day itinerary.

What we have not verified

We have not been in Shillong during peak bloom with a camera. Everything on this page about where the best trees are is second-hand until that happens, and the dates are marked for checking rather than asserted.
