If you give one thing
A gamosa. At Bihu it is not one option among several; it is the gesture itself. Everything else on this page is an addition to it.
Handed over with both hands. Not tossed, not passed one-handed.
By recipient
For Assamese family or elders. Gamosa, and for someone senior, a gamosa with a xorai. They will know exactly what both are and a card explaining them would be faintly comic.
For an Assamese friend living far away. Tea, and specifically tea from a named garden, because what is sold as Assam tea in a supermarket in Bangalore or London is not what they grew up with. This is the gift that most reliably lands.
For someone not Assamese. A gift set, with a card that says what each thing is. An object nobody can read is just an object. This is the case our Bihu gift set exists for.
For a house. A xorai or a bell metal bowl. Heavy, lasting, and it will still be in the house in thirty years, which very few gifts manage.
For someone who likes clothes. An eri shawl. Warm, matte, unlike anything they own, and it does not need to fit.

The timing problem nobody mentions
In the ten days before any major Indian festival, every courier in the country is at capacity and delivery estimates stop meaning anything. Three weeks ahead for anything that has to arrive on a date.
If you have left it late, send tea. It is light, it ships fast, and it does not need to arrive on the exact day to make sense.
What not to give
Anything with a GI logo printed on it by a seller who cannot explain what that means. The logo is regulated and widely misused.

Generic Indian handicraft sold as Assamese. Checked cotton gamchas from North India are sold constantly as Assamese gamosas and an Assamese recipient will notice immediately.
Corporate gifting
Tea in quantity, or small gift boxes. Ask for a GST invoice and confirm lead time in writing before committing, because handloom and bell metal cannot be produced to a rush order the way a printed mug can.

- What is the traditional gift to give at Bihu?
- A gamosa. It is given to elders, to family and to anyone being shown respect, and it is the one gift that is expected rather than optional. Everything else is an addition to it.
- What is a good gift from Assam?
- A handwoven gamosa, Assam tea from a named garden, a bell metal xorai, a japi, or an eri silk shawl. Which one depends on who is receiving it and whether they will know what it is.
- When should Bihu gifts be ordered?
- At least two weeks ahead for delivery outside the Northeast, and three in the week before the festival, when couriers across India are saturated. Rongali Bihu is in mid April, Magh Bihu in mid January, Kati Bihu in October.
- Is it appropriate to give a gamosa if you are not Assamese?
- Yes, and it is taken well. Hand it over with both hands, and do not use one as a towel in front of the person who gave it to you.
