About Shillong

Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya and the primary base for exploring the entire state. Sitting at 1,496 metres above sea level in the Khasi Hills, it earned the nickname “Scotland of the East” from British administrators who saw a resemblance to the Scottish highlands in its rolling hills and pine forests. The city sits roughly 100 km from Guwahati along a well-maintained highway, making it easy to reach from the main northeast gateway. Beyond its colonial-era bungalows and Catholic churches, Shillong has developed a strong live music scene, with local bands playing rock, blues, and folk at venues across Police Bazar. It functions as a proper city with good hotels, restaurants, and transport links in every direction, so most visitors spend at least two to three nights here before heading deeper into Meghalaya.

Top Attractions in Shillong

Umiam Lake stretches across 220 square kilometres just 15 km north of the city centre, surrounded by pine-covered hills. Pedal boats are available for hire and the early-morning mist over the water is worth an early start. Shillong Peak rises to 1,965 metres and offers a panoramic view across the city and the surrounding hills, often with clouds moving through at eye level. It is managed by the Indian Air Force, so carry identification.

Elephant Falls is a three-tiered waterfall about 12 km from the city centre, set in a forested gorge. The lower tier is the most dramatic, though the path down can be slippery after rain. Ward’s Lake in the centre of town is a pleasant Victorian-era garden lake, good for a morning walk. The Don Bosco Museum is one of the best cultural museums in the entire northeast, covering the history, traditions, and crafts of the region’s indigenous communities across seven floors.

Laitlum Canyon is about 25 km from the city and offers some of the most dramatic gorge views in Meghalaya, with deep valleys dropping away on three sides. It is less visited than the other sites and worth the detour. The Mawkdok Dympep Valley View Point on the Shillong-Cherrapunji road provides a fine aerial view of the deep valley below and is a standard stop on any day trip toward Sohra.

Why Visit Shillong

Shillong is the one city in Meghalaya that combines genuine urban facilities with easy access to both natural and cultural sites. No other base gives you day-trip reach to Cherrapunji, Mawlynnong, Dawki, and the Khasi Hills sacred groves all within two to three hours by road. The city also has its own character: a music scene, a food culture, and markets that reward slow exploration.

Best Time to Visit Shillong

October to April is the most comfortable window. The monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain and landslide risk on mountain roads, though the waterfalls are at their most powerful and the hills turn intensely green. December and January are cold, with temperatures dropping to around 4-5 degrees Celsius at night, so carry warm layers. March and April are the most pleasant months, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures in the mid-20s.

How to Reach Shillong

By Air: The nearest commercial airport is Umroi Airport (SHL), about 30 km from the city, with limited IndiGo flights from Kolkata. Most visitors fly into Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), then take a shared cab or bus along NH6. The 100 km drive takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic at the Meghalaya border.

By Rail: Guwahati is the nearest major railhead. Frequent trains connect Guwahati to Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai. From Guwahati station, shared sumos (shared jeeps) and private taxis run to Shillong throughout the day.

By Road: State-run buses and private operators connect Shillong to Guwahati, Agartala, Silchar, and Tura. The Shillong-Guwahati highway (NH6) is the main corridor and generally in good condition.

Nearby Destinations

From Shillong, the most popular excursions are to Cherrapunji (50 km south), Dawki (96 km south), Mawlynnong (90 km south), and Jowai (65 km east). Guwahati to the north serves as the main air and rail gateway.
