About Mawlynnong

Mawlynnong is a small Khasi village in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, about 90 km south of Shillong near the Bangladesh border. It gained international attention after being named “Asia’s Cleanest Village” by Discover India magazine in 2003, a designation that has held up through subsequent years due to the community’s disciplined waste management practices. Every household maintains its own compost bin, bamboo dustbins line the pathways, and plastic is actively discouraged. The village is genuinely spotless, with whitewashed fences, flowering hedges, and swept earth paths that reflect the work of a very deliberate community hand. Literacy rates here are among the highest in the region, and the village serves as a model for environmental governance. Most visitors come on a day trip from Shillong, often combined with Dawki on the same circuit. Staying overnight is possible through village homestays and gives a very different, quieter experience once the day tourists leave.

Top Attractions in Mawlynnong

The village itself is the primary draw: a network of clean paths, traditional Khasi bamboo houses, small gardens, and a general atmosphere of order that is rare in rural India. The community has preserved its architecture and natural environment deliberately, and walking through the lanes is genuinely pleasant.

The sky-view bamboo observation tower stands about 8 metres tall at the edge of the village and provides a view across the tree canopy and into Bangladesh on clear days. It is simple in construction but striking, offering a rare elevated perspective on the forested landscape below.

Riwai Living Root Bridge is a single-decker living root bridge about 1.5 km from the village, one of the most accessible in Meghalaya. The roots of rubber trees have been trained across a stream over several decades, forming a natural living bridge. Unlike the Double Decker bridge at Nongriat, Riwai requires no strenuous trek and is reachable in 20 minutes on foot from the village centre. The stream running under it is clear and good for a short paddle.

The balancing rock is a large naturally-balanced boulder near the village that has become a minor local attraction. The Bangladesh border viewpoint on the hills above the village provides a clear sight line across the flat Sylhet plains on a good day.

Why Visit Mawlynnong

Mawlynnong offers something different from the waterfall-and-cave circuit that defines most Meghalaya itineraries. It is a working village where environmental consciousness is a community-wide practice, and that context makes the cleanliness meaningful rather than merely decorative. The Riwai root bridge adds a genuine natural attraction to what would otherwise be a cultural visit.

Best Time to Visit Mawlynnong

October to March is the best period. The village is accessible year-round, but the trail to Riwai becomes slippery during heavy monsoon months (June to September). The Bangladesh border viewpoint is most rewarding in the clear winter months when the plains stretch out cleanly to the horizon. April and May are warm but still pleasant. Avoid visiting on weekends if possible, as Mawlynnong gets heavy day-trip traffic from Shillong.

How to Reach Mawlynnong

By Air: The nearest airports are Umroi Airport near Shillong (about 120 km) and Guwahati (about 200 km). Both require onward road travel.

By Rail: Guwahati is the nearest major railhead. From Guwahati, take a cab to Shillong and then drive south to Mawlynnong.

By Road: Mawlynnong is 90 km from Shillong via the Pynursla road. The drive takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. Most visitors combine Mawlynnong with Dawki (15 km away) as a two-day loop from Shillong. Shared cabs run from Police Bazar in Shillong to Pynursla, from where you can hire a local vehicle to the village.

Nearby Destinations

Dawki is the most logical pairing, just 15 km from Mawlynnong, with the crystal-clear Umngot River and Shnongpdeng camping. Shillong is 90 km north and the main base for the region. Cherrapunji can be looped in via a longer route through the Khasi Hills.
