About Dawki

Dawki is a small border town in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, sitting 96 km south of Shillong at the point where the Umngot River forms the natural boundary between India and Bangladesh. The town itself is modest, but the river is the reason people come from across the country. The Umngot runs so clear in the dry season that boats appear to float on glass, with every pebble and riverbed visible beneath them. This transparency is the result of minimal upstream industrial activity and the geology of the surrounding hills. Dawki functions as a one-of-a-kind river destination: visitors come for boating on the Umngot, camping along its sandy banks, and for the unusual experience of looking across a river into another country. The Bangladesh border crossing here is active for trade, giving Dawki a distinct frontier character that adds to the appeal. Most visitors combine Dawki with nearby Mawlynnong in a single day or two-day circuit from Shillong.

Top Attractions in Dawki

Shnongpdeng is the main activity hub just upstream from Dawki town, where the river is widest and clearest. Operators here offer boating, kayaking, snorkelling, cliff jumping, and riverside camping. The camps along the bank are simple but well-run, and spending the night here is one of the more memorable experiences in Meghalaya. The transparency of the water is best between November and March, before the pre-monsoon rains begin to cloud the river.

The Dawki Suspension Bridge spans the Umngot and provides a direct view down into the crystal river below. From the bridge, the riverbed detail is extraordinary in good light. The India-Bangladesh border viewpoint on the hills above town lets you look across into Sylhet district, with Bangladeshi settlements visible on the far bank. The weekly market at Dawki is a traditional trading spot where goods cross informally between the two countries.

Krang Suri Falls is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Meghalaya, about 45 km from Dawki in the Jaintia Hills direction. The water falls into a pool of striking turquoise-green, fed by mineral-rich springs. It is best visited October to April when the access trail is dry.

Why Visit Dawki

The Umngot River in the dry season is one of the most visually striking natural experiences in northeast India. No other river in the region offers this combination of transparency, scale, and accessibility. The combination of boating, camping, and borderland atmosphere makes Dawki unlike any other stop in Meghalaya.

Best Time to Visit Dawki

October to March is the ideal window. The river is at its clearest in this period, with the sandy banks exposed and the water level low enough for safe swimming and kayaking. By April the pre-monsoon rain begins to silt the river, and from June to September the Umngot rises dramatically and loses its characteristic clarity. Monsoon visits are possible but the river experience is very different.

How to Reach Dawki
