About Jowai

Jowai is the administrative capital of West Jaintia Hills district in Meghalaya, sitting 65 km east of Shillong along the NH6 highway toward Silchar. It is a proper hill town rather than a tourist set piece, which makes it one of the more authentic places to experience everyday Meghalaya without the crowds that gather at Shillong or Cherrapunji. The Jaintia Hills around Jowai have a distinct landscape from the Khasi Hills to the west: broader plateaus, more open grassland, and a slightly lower elevation that makes the climate warmer. The surrounding area holds some remarkable natural and cultural sites that remain largely undiscovered by mainstream visitors, including a turquoise waterfall, ancient megalithic monuments, and an unusual sandstone canyon. Jowai is the right base if you want the less-visited side of Meghalaya and a chance to spend time in a Jaintia community that retains strong cultural traditions.

Top Attractions in Jowai

Krang Suri Falls is the most photographed waterfall in the Jaintia Hills, about 50 km from Jowai town. The water drops in multiple tiers into a pool of striking turquoise-green colour, fed by springs with high mineral content. A short bamboo bridge crosses the stream above the pool. It is best visited between October and March when the access trail is dry and the colour is at its most vivid.

Nartiang Monoliths is an extraordinary megalithic site about 60 km from Jowai, where dozens of tall sandstone menhirs and flat table stones stand in a field that served as a ceremonial ground for the Jaintia kings. Some of the standing stones exceed 8 metres in height. There is also a Durga temple adjacent to the site that dates back several centuries. The combination of megalithic and Hindu heritage in a single location is unusual and historically significant.

Phe Phe Fall is a multi-tiered waterfall in the hills south of Jowai, less accessible than Krang Suri but rewarding for those who make the effort. The approach involves a short hike through forest. Tyrshi Waterfall is another cascade in the Jaintia Hills reachable from Jowai, with a forested gorge setting.

Wari Chora is a sandstone canyon carved by a river through the Jaintia plateau, offering an unusual geological landscape that contrasts sharply with the limestone formations found in the Khasi Hills. The canyon walls drop steeply and the river at the bottom is clear and calm in the dry season.

Why Visit Jowai

Jowai gives you access to waterfall and megalithic sites that rival anything in western Meghalaya, with a fraction of the tourist traffic. If you are travelling from Shillong toward Silchar or Guwahati via the eastern route, Jowai is a natural overnight stop that adds real depth to a Meghalaya itinerary.

Best Time to Visit Jowai

October to February is the best period. The monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain and makes some of the waterfall trails difficult to navigate safely. Krang Suri in particular is most accessible and most beautiful in the dry months. The Nartiang Monoliths can be visited year-round. Winter in Jowai is cooler than Shillong but not as cold, making it a comfortable base.

How to Reach Jowai

By Air: The nearest airport is Umroi Airport near Shillong (about 90 km). Guwahati airport is about 130 km away. Both require onward road travel to Jowai.

By Rail: The nearest major railway station is Guwahati. Badarpur Junction in Assam (about 80 km from Jowai) has some connections but limited direct services from major cities.

By Road: Jowai is 65 km east of Shillong on NH6. Shared cabs run regularly from Bara Bazar in Shillong. Private taxis can be hired for the day to cover Jowai, Krang Suri, and Nartiang in one long circuit. The drive from Shillong takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Nearby Destinations

Shillong is 65 km west and the main regional hub for accommodation and transport connections. Dawki is accessible via a longer drive south through the hills. Cherrapunji can be reached by looping back west from Shillong.
