About Cherrapunji

Cherrapunji, locally called Sohra, holds the record for some of the highest annual rainfall on Earth and sits at 1,484 metres in the southern Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. Just 50 km from Shillong by road, it is easily reached as a day trip, though staying overnight gives you the mornings before tour groups arrive and a chance to see the clouds rolling in off the plains of Bangladesh far below. The landscape shifts dramatically with the season: monsoon turns the plateau into a continuous roar of falling water, while the dry months from October to May reveal deep green gorges and clear views to the lowlands. Cherrapunji is the main base for visiting the living root bridges at Nongriat, the limestone cave systems around Mawsmai, and a string of major waterfalls that are among the tallest in India. It is a place built around water in every sense.

Top Attractions in Cherrapunji

Nohkalikai Falls drops 340 metres into a plunge pool of turquoise water, making it the tallest plunge waterfall in India. The viewpoint is about 5 km from the Cherrapunji market and the pool turns a striking blue-green in the dry season. Seven Sisters Falls is a seven-segmented cascade visible from a roadside viewpoint during the monsoon months; in the dry season it reduces to a trickle, so timing matters.

Mawsmai Cave is the most accessible limestone cave in Meghalaya, with a lit walkway through narrow passages and impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations. Arwah Cave nearby is longer and less commercialised, with fossil imprints visible in the rock walls. Both can be done in a single morning.

Thangkharang Park sits at the edge of the plateau and offers sweeping views across the Bangladesh plains on clear days. Wei Sawdong Falls is a three-tiered waterfall reachable by a short but steep forest trail, less crowded than the main viewpoints. Lyngksiar Falls and Wah Kaba Falls are two more cascades within easy driving distance of Sohra that reward those willing to explore beyond the main circuit.

Why Visit Cherrapunji

No place in northeast India concentrates this much natural drama in a small area. Within 20 km of Cherrapunji town you have the highest plunge waterfall in India, one of the world’s best-known cave systems, living bio-engineering in the form of root bridges, and views across an international border. The sheer density of major sights is unmatched anywhere in Meghalaya.

Best Time to Visit Cherrapunji

The answer depends entirely on what you want to see. July to September brings the full monsoon: waterfalls thunder at maximum volume, the gorges are veiled in mist, and the landscape is at its most dramatic. Roads can become tricky and some trails are impassable. October to May is drier, safer for trekking to Nongriat, and better for cave visits. The living root bridges are best seen in the dry months when the trails are firm and the water is clear. Winter (December to February) is cold and clear, with excellent visibility across to Bangladesh.
