About Kaziranga
Kaziranga is the wildlife centrepiece of Assam and one of India’s most important conservation success stories. The national park spreads across 430 sq km of alluvial floodplain in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts, roughly 215 km east of Guwahati along NH27. Kaziranga holds approximately 2,600 Indian one-horned rhinoceroses, which accounts for more than two-thirds of the global population. The park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Besides rhinos, the park shelters the highest density of tigers of any protected area in the world, along with wild water buffalo, swamp deer, Asian elephants, and over 500 species of birds. The small township of Kohora serves as the main accommodation and access hub, with dozens of lodges and resorts along the highway.

Top Attractions in Kaziranga
Kaziranga National Park is divided into four ranges: Central (Kohora), Western (Bagori), Eastern (Agoratoli), and Burapahar. The Central Range is the most visited and the most densely populated with rhinos. Jeep safaris run in the morning (6-9 AM) and afternoon (2-5 PM) sessions; the morning slots are significantly better for wildlife sightings. Elephant safaris operate in the Central and Western ranges before dawn and offer a quieter, closer approach to grazing rhinos in the tall elephant grass.
The Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park sits near the entrance to the Central Range and maintains over 500 species of orchids from northeast India, along with sections on medicinal plants and local biodiversity. It is a worthwhile half-hour stop before or after a safari.
Kakochang Waterfall falls through a tea estate about 25 km from Kohora on the road toward Jorhat. The area around the falls, on the slopes of the Karbi Anglong plateau, offers a different landscape from the flat park grasslands below. Deopahar Ruins, also on the Karbi Anglong plateau roughly 30 km from Kohora, preserves medieval temple fragments and sculptures in a forested hilltop setting.
Why Visit Kaziranga
No other location in India offers the same probability of seeing one-horned rhinos at close range. The park’s open grassland topography, unlike the dense forests of many other reserves, means sightings are frequent even on a single morning safari. The combination of rhinos, tigers, wild buffalo, and a remarkable bird list makes it one of the most productive wildlife destinations in Asia.
Best Time to Visit Kaziranga
| Season | Months | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Best | November - April | Park open, dry, cool to warm, grass burns improve visibility |
| Peak | February - March | Grass cut or burnt, highest visibility for rhinos and tigers |
| Closed | May - October | Park closed for monsoon; Brahmaputra floods the grasslands |
The park typically opens in mid-October and closes on 30 April each year. February and March offer the best visibility because park authorities conduct controlled burns of the tall elephant grass, allowing clearer sightlines across the floodplain.
