About Tezpur
Tezpur is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Assam, positioned on the north bank of the Brahmaputra about 175 km northeast of Guwahati. The town sits at the foot of the Arunachal foothills and the nearby Brahmaputra is particularly wide here, crossed by the Kalia Bhomora Setu bridge. Tezpur Airport (TEZ) connects the city to Guwahati and Kolkata, making it an accessible midpoint stop rather than a destination requiring a full day’s drive from the state capital. The town’s name, derived from the Assamese word for blood, refers to a mythological battle from the Mahabharata said to have occurred here. That ancient character persists in the ruins at Bamuni Hills and Agnigarh, which date from the 9th-11th centuries and represent some of the oldest surviving stone architecture in Assam. Tezpur also functions as the northern gateway to Nameri National Park.

Top Attractions in Tezpur
Bamuni Hills preserves ruins of 9th-11th century temples on a low hill at the edge of the town. The carved doorframes, figures, and structural remains are scattered across the site in varying states, but the Archaeological Survey of India maintains the core collection. The level of sculptural detail on some pieces - particularly the dikpalas (directional guardians) - reflects a sophisticated local school of stone carving that predates most of Assam’s better-known heritage. The site is 5 km from the main market area.
Agnigarh Hill, visible from much of central Tezpur, carries a mythological association with the story of Usha and Aniruddha from the Bhagavata Purana. The hilltop offers a broad view across the Brahmaputra and toward the Arunachal range on the north bank. Chitralekha Udyan, the town park at the base of Agnigarh, has a small recreation area and displays of statues related to the local myth.
Nameri National Park and Forest Reserve lies 35 km north of Tezpur, at the base of the Arunachal foothills. The park protects 200 sq km of mixed semi-evergreen forest along the Jia Bhoreli River and is particularly valued for birdwatching: over 370 species have been recorded, including the rare White-winged Wood Duck. Rafting on the Jia Bhoreli through the park boundary is available through licensed operators and combines wildlife sightings with a river journey through forest-covered hills.
Manas National Park, 60 km west of Tezpur, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Project Tiger reserve that protects tigers, elephants, one-horned rhinos, and golden langurs. Tezpur is the most practical base for accessing Manas from the eastern side.
Why Visit Tezpur
Tezpur fills a specific gap in an Assam itinerary: it is the natural overnight stop between Guwahati and Kaziranga for travellers who want to break the drive and add content rather than simply transiting. The ruins at Bamuni Hills are genuinely undervisited relative to their quality, and Nameri National Park offers a birding and rafting experience that differs markedly from the grassland safaris at Kaziranga.

How to Reach Tezpur
- By Air: Tezpur Airport (TEZ), also called Salonibari Airport, is 13 km from the city centre, about 20 minutes. IndiGo operates flights from Kolkata (1h 25m) and Guwahati (30m).
- By Rail: The nearest railway station is Dekargaon, 5 km from Tezpur town, which has limited services. Most travellers use Rangapara North Junction, about 30 km east, which is better connected on the Assam Rail Link.
- By Road: Tezpur is 175 km from Guwahati on NH15 (about 3-3.5 hours), and 90 km west of Kaziranga on NH15 via Nagaon (about 2 hours). The Kalia Bhomora Setu bridge connects Tezpur to the south bank and onward to Kaziranga.
Nearby Destinations
Kaziranga is 90 km east and the most natural next stop for wildlife. Guwahati is 175 km west and the entry point for most visitors to Assam. Haflong is accessible via a longer route south but represents a complete change to hill-station terrain for those wanting varied landscapes in a single Assam trip.
