About Jorhat
Jorhat is widely called the tea capital of Assam, with more than 140 tea estates operating in and around the district. Located 305 km east of Guwahati and connected by Jorhat Airport (JRH), the city sits at a practical midpoint between the wildlife country of Kaziranga and the far Upper Assam districts near Dibrugarh. Its most important role for most travellers, though, is as the jumping-off point for Majuli: the Neamati Ghat ferry crosses to the island in about 1-1.5 hours and operates from early morning. Beyond tea and the Majuli connection, Jorhat has genuine colonial-era heritage at Thengal Bhawan, a research legacy at the Tocklai Tea Research Institute (one of the oldest in the world), and rare wildlife in the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary just 20 km from town.

Top Attractions in Jorhat
Kamalabari Satra on Majuli is only a 90-minute journey from Jorhat via the Neamati Ghat ferry, and it stands as one of the most important neo-Vaishnavite monasteries in Assam. For wildlife, the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary on the eastern edge of Jorhat town protects the only population of Hoolock Gibbons in northeast Assam. Early morning visits between 6 and 8 AM offer the best chance of hearing their distinctive calls through the semi-evergreen forest.
Tea estate visits are the other defining Jorhat experience. Estates like Bhogdoi, Mariani, and Daisajan welcome visitors for guided factory tours, especially during the second flush season (May-June) when the malty Assam character is most pronounced. Thengal Bhawan is a 19th-century colonial mansion, now preserved as a heritage museum, that documents the early planter era. The Tocklai Tea Research Institute, established in 1911, maintains demonstration gardens and occasionally opens to visitors with advance notice.
The Dhekiakhowa Bornamghar, about 15 km from town, is a 500-year-old Vaishnavite prayer hall where a lamp lit by Srimanta Sankardeva’s disciple is said to have burned continuously for centuries. It is a quiet but genuinely atmospheric place.
Why Visit Jorhat
Jorhat is the only practical base for day-tripping to Majuli and returning the same evening, which matters for travellers on tighter schedules. The combination of working tea estates with guest accommodation, forest wildlife within the city boundaries, and a ferry link to India’s largest river island makes it one of the more interesting hub cities in Assam.
