About Udaipur

Udaipur is Tripura’s oldest capital, a town of considerable historical weight sitting 55 km south of Agartala in the Gomati district. Before Agartala became the state capital in 1760, Udaipur served as the seat of the Manikya dynasty for centuries, and that heritage is still visible in the town’s temples, lakes, and royal gardens. The town is best known today as a pilgrimage centre, anchored by the Tripurasundari temple on Matabari hill, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas recognised across Hindu tradition. The area around the temple is dotted with tanks and smaller shrines, giving Udaipur a calm, temple-town character that contrasts with the pace of Agartala. The local population is a mix of Bengali Hindus and tribal Tripuri communities, and the town sees significant pilgrim traffic throughout the year, peaking during Diwali and during the annual Kharchi Puja festival. Like the rest of Tripura, no Inner Line Permit is required to visit Udaipur.

Top Attractions in Udaipur

Tripurasundari Shaktipeeth on Matabari hill is the defining attraction: a 500-year-old temple housing a small but deeply venerated goddess idol, counted as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Hindu tradition. The temple draws pilgrims from across Bengal, Assam, and beyond. Tripura Sundari Temple is the formal pilgrimage complex around the main shrine, set on a low hillock with views of the surrounding countryside. Nearby, the Amarsagar tank and Dhanyashri Lake are peaceful spots that were part of the original royal complex, with century-old trees lining the banks. Chabimura is a remarkable rock-carving site on the banks of the Gomati river, about 38 km from Udaipur, where large Shaivite images are carved into the riverbank cliff face. Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary lies northeast of Udaipur along the Gumti river and offers forest treks and birdwatching. Pilak Historical Stupa in the south of the district contains ancient Buddhist and Hindu sculptures dating back to the 8th-9th century. Udaipur Science Centre offers a good interactive break for visitors travelling with children.

Why Visit Udaipur

Udaipur holds one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, which makes it a serious pilgrimage destination in its own right, not just a sightseeing stop. Beyond the temple, the combination of ancient lakes, royal garden ruins, and the Chabimura rock carvings along the Gomati river gives the town a depth that rewards a full day visit rather than just a temple run from Agartala.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur

October to February is the best time. The weather is dry and cool, the lakes are at a good level, and the temple is most photogenic in morning light. Diwali sees heavy pilgrimage crowds at the Tripurasundari temple and is worth timing your visit around if you want to witness the festival atmosphere. March can be warm but manageable. Avoid June to September due to heavy monsoon rain and difficult road conditions to some outer sites like Chabimura and Pilak.
