About Neermahal

Neermahal is one of the most striking royal monuments in Tripura, a palace built entirely on a lake that looks like it belongs in a different era. Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya constructed it in 1930 on Rudrasagar Lake, roughly 53 km south of Agartala, as a summer retreat that combined Mughal and Hindu architectural styles. The result is a white two-storeyed structure with 24 rooms, open pavilions, and turrets that glow gold in the late afternoon light and reflect perfectly in the calm water around it. Access to the palace is by boat from Melaghar village, about 3 km from the palace jetty, with shared boat rides costing Rs 10-25 per person depending on the season. The surrounding lake supports a rich population of migratory birds between October and March, which adds to the experience for visitors who arrive early in the morning. No Inner Line Permit is needed to visit Neermahal or anywhere in Tripura, making it straightforward to plan a trip as part of a day excursion from Agartala or as an overnight stop.

Top Attractions in Neermahal

Neermahal itself is the centrepiece: a two-storey Mughal-Hindu palace rising from the middle of Rudrasagar Lake, reachable only by boat. The boat ride from Melaghar takes about 15-20 minutes and passes through open water where you can often spot kingfishers, storks, and herons. Narkel Kunj Island near the Melaghar boat ghat is a small coconut grove island worth a short stop. Further along from Neermahal, Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary is a 18.5 sq km sanctuary home to clouded leopards, spectacled monkeys, and over 150 bird species, with a well-maintained zoo section and a botanical garden. Sepahijala Zoological Park within the sanctuary is particularly popular with families visiting from Agartala. Tepania Eco Park adds a quieter nature-focused option a short drive away, with forest trails and a small lake. For those interested in temple architecture, the area around Melaghar has several old temples worth visiting.

Why Visit Neermahal

Neermahal is the only water palace in Northeast India and one of only two lake palaces in the entire country. The combination of Rudrasagar Lake’s open water, the palace’s unusual Mughal-Hindu design, and the surrounding birdlife makes it a genuinely rare experience that is completely different from the typical hill or forest destinations in the Northeast.

Best Time to Visit Neermahal

October to March is the ideal period. During these months, the weather is dry and clear, the lake reflects the palace well for photography, and migratory birds are present on the water. The Neermahal Utsav festival is held on the lake in late October or November each year, with cultural performances staged on illuminated boats. Avoid June to September: the monsoon raises the lake level, reduces visibility, and makes the boat access choppy and sometimes suspended.

How to Reach Neermahal

By Air: Fly into Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport (IXA) in Agartala, the only commercial airport in Tripura, with direct flights from Kolkata, Delhi, and Guwahati. From the airport to Neermahal is about 53 km (1.5 hours by road).

By Rail: Agartala railway station is the nearest major railhead, 53 km from Neermahal. Take a taxi or shared vehicle from Agartala towards Melaghar.

By Road: From Agartala, take the road south toward Amarpur and turn off for Melaghar. The journey is 53 km and takes about 1.5 hours. From Udaipur, Neermahal is about 25 km north. Shared autos and local buses run from Agartala to Melaghar, but hiring a taxi or auto from Agartala gives more flexibility for timing the boat ride.

Nearby Destinations

Neermahal sits between two other important Tripura hubs. Agartala, the state capital, is 53 km north and is the main transport hub for flights and trains. Udaipur, Tripura’s former royal capital and home to the Tripurasundari Shaktipeeth, is about 25 km south of Neermahal, making it easy to combine both in a single day trip from Agartala.

Plan Your Neermahal Trip

Most visitors see Neermahal as a day trip from Agartala, but staying overnight in Melaghar lets you catch the palace at sunrise and avoid the midday crowds. To explore all Tripura destinations, see our complete state guide with route maps, accommodation options, and seasonal travel advice.
