About Agartala
Agartala is the capital of Tripura and the second-largest city in Northeast India, sitting at just 12 metres above sea level near the Bangladesh border. Three sides of Tripura border Bangladesh, which gives the state a geography unlike any other in the Northeast, and Agartala sits at the centre of this unique position. The city has been shaped by centuries of royal rule under the Manikya dynasty, whose palaces still define its skyline. Bengali and Tripuri cultures meet here in everyday life, from the street food to the festivals to the language you hear on the roads. For visitors, Agartala is the essential entry point to Tripura: it has the only commercial airport in the state, a growing railway connection, and road links to every major destination within the region. Unlike most Northeast states, Tripura requires no Inner Line Permit, making it easy to visit for Indian nationals and most foreign tourists on a standard Indian visa.

Top Attractions in Agartala
Ujjayanta Palace is the crown of Agartala: a three-domed Indo-Saracenic palace built in 1901 that now serves as the state museum, housing royal artefacts, tribal costumes, and sculptures from across Tripura’s history. A short drive away, the Fourteen Gods Temple is one of the most important religious sites in the city, dedicated to fourteen deities of the Manikya royal family and thronged by devotees year-round. Shri Jagannath Temple draws pilgrims from across the state, while Kasba Kali Bari is a quieter but deeply significant temple complex close to the palace grounds. For a break from history, Heritage Park offers landscaped gardens with replicas of Northeast India’s heritage monuments, and Rabindra Kanan is a popular green space for an evening walk. Khumulwng Park and Oxygen Park are good options for families. The Tripura State Museum inside Ujjayanta Palace is the best starting point for understanding the state’s layered history.
Why Visit Agartala
Agartala is the only practical base for exploring Tripura: it has the state’s sole airport, the main railway terminus, and day-trip road access to Neermahal (53 km), Udaipur (55 km), and Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary. The city’s royal architecture, particularly Ujjayanta Palace, rivals anything in Northeast India, and the absence of permit requirements means you can arrive and start exploring without paperwork.
Best Time to Visit Agartala
October to March is the best window for Agartala. Temperatures during these months range from around 13 to 28 degrees Celsius, making sightseeing comfortable and evenings pleasant. April and May grow hot and humid. June through September brings heavy monsoon rain, with Agartala receiving over 2,000 mm of annual rainfall, so outdoor sightseeing becomes difficult and some roads flood.
