About Haflong

Haflong is the only hill station in Assam and the headquarters of the Dima Hasao Autonomous District, perched at roughly 680 metres above sea level in the North Cachar Hills. Located approximately 320 km south of Guwahati and 150 km north of Silchar, Haflong occupies a ridge position that opens onto steep forested slopes and the valley below. The surrounding Dima Hasao hills are home to the Dimasa, Zeme Naga, Hmar, and Kuki communities, giving the area a cultural diversity distinct from the Brahmaputra Valley. The town itself is small, with a market street and a railway station on the picturesque Lumding-Sabroom hill railway, one of India’s most scenic narrow-gauge routes. The combination of cool temperatures (15-25°C in peak season), quiet forested walks, a scenic lake, and genuine indigenous culture makes Haflong the most different destination from the mainstream Assam circuit.

Top Attractions in Haflong

Haflong Lake, set just below the main market ridge, is the defining feature of the town. Pedal boats are available, and the lake shore walk in the early morning before the mist clears is a calm way to start the day. The lake is fed by hill streams and surrounded by pine and broadleaf forest. Several viewpoints on the ridge above the town give wide-angle views across the valley toward Meghalaya and the Barail Range; the Ouguri Hill View Point is one of the more accessible hilltop spots with a clear panorama toward the south.

Maibong, about 60 km north of Haflong, is the site of the medieval Dimasa Kachari capital. The ruins include a large stone temple complex, a tank, and foundation remnants from a settlement that functioned as a significant regional power in the 16th-17th centuries before being abandoned. The site receives few visitors and requires some uphill walking to reach the main structures, but the forest setting and sculptural fragments make it worthwhile. Jatinga Valley, about 9 km from Haflong, is known internationally among birdwatchers for the phenomenon of migrating birds landing and dying there during the monsoon season, typically August-September. The mechanism behind this behaviour remains debated among ornithologists.

The Ramchandi Temple on a hill above the lake is a local pilgrimage site with views over Haflong that are particularly good at dawn. Hill forest trails around Haflong range from short walks accessible from the town to longer treks toward Borail Wildlife Sanctuary, requiring a guide and advance planning.

Kaipholangso Waterfall, about 25 km from Haflong in the Dima Hasao hills, falls through dense subtropical forest and is a rewarding half-day trip by road and short trail. The waterfall is seasonal and most impressive from October through January after the rains.

Why Visit Haflong

Haflong offers the one experience most of Assam cannot: a cool, genuinely hilly environment with forested walks, a scenic lake, and indigenous cultural context outside the Brahmaputra Valley mainstream. For travellers connecting between Guwahati and Silchar or crossing into Mizoram, it is the logical overnight stop that also happens to be the most atmospherically different from everywhere else in the state.

How to Reach Haflong

  • By Air: There is no airport at Haflong. Silchar Airport (IXS) is the nearest, approximately 150 km south (3-4 hours by hill road). Guwahati Airport (GAU) is about 320 km north (5-6 hours). Taxis from both airports can be arranged.
  • By Rail: Haflong Hill Railway Station is on the narrow-gauge Lumding-Sabroom line. The journey from Lumding, a major junction 90 km north, takes 4-5 hours through spectacular hill scenery. From Guwahati, reach Lumding by broad-gauge train (3 hours) then transfer. Check current operational status of the hill section, as landslides occasionally disrupt services.
  • By Road: The most reliable route from Guwahati is NH27 to Lumding then NH306 south through the hills to Haflong (total 5-6 hours). From Silchar, NH306 runs north through the Barail Range, about 3-4 hours. Road conditions in the hill section require caution, particularly at night.

Nearby Destinations

Silchar is 150 km south and serves as the urban base for the Barak Valley, with the nearest domestic airport. Guwahati is the full-service state gateway, 320 km north, for onward flights across India and connections to other northeast states. Kaziranga is reachable via Lumding and NH27 in a full day’s drive, making a Haflong-Kaziranga combination a practical if ambitious two-day road journey.
