About Silchar

Silchar is the administrative and commercial capital of the Barak Valley, the southern division of Assam separated from the Brahmaputra Valley by the Barail Range. Sitting at roughly 24°N latitude, about 340 km south of Guwahati, Silchar occupies a low-lying position along the Barak River and connects to a culturally distinct Bengali-speaking population that has shaped the city’s character for over a century. Silchar Airport (IXS) links the city to Kolkata, Guwahati, and Imphal, making it the natural starting point for travellers entering the southern Assam and Mizoram corridor. The city itself is flat and dense, but the surrounding Barak Valley landscape of wetlands, hills, and rivers rewards those who explore beyond the urban core. It also serves as a staging point for crossing into Mizoram via Vairengte and into Manipur via Jiribam.

Top Attractions in Silchar

The Khaspur Ruins, about 12 km from Silchar city centre, are the remains of the capital of the Cachar kingdom, which ruled this valley for several centuries until British annexation in 1832. The site preserves stone temple platforms, boundary walls, and gateway arches in a forested setting that sees few visitors despite its historical significance. Dolu Lake, 6 km north of the city, is a seasonal wetland that attracts migratory birds in winter and provides a quiet open-air space away from the city’s traffic.

The Maniharan Tunnel, cut through a low hill near the city, is a local curiosity with a small temple at its entrance. Phubala Lake, about 10 km from Silchar, is another bird-watching spot popular with local naturalists between November and February. The Shree Shree Kali Temple at Ranir Bazar is one of the most active religious sites in the city and draws large crowds during Kali Puja in October-November. The Badarpur Fort, southeast of Silchar along the Barak River, preserves remnants of a riverside fortification from the Cachar period.

Why Visit Silchar

Silchar is the only significant city in the Barak Valley, which means it is the unavoidable base for anyone exploring southern Assam or crossing overland into Mizoram or Manipur. For travellers interested in Bengali culture outside Bengal, the Barak Valley’s language politics and history - it was the site of the 1961 Language Movement where 11 people died defending Bengali’s official status - give the city an unusual social depth.
