About Champhai

Champhai is Mizoram’s eastern highland gateway, sitting at 1,678 metres above sea level along the India-Myanmar border. It is the highest-altitude hub city in Mizoram and one of the most scenic, with rolling green hills, apple and grape orchards, and wide valley panoramas that extend into Myanmar on clear days. The town is 192 km east of Aizawl along NH54 and takes roughly five to six hours to reach by road.

Known historically as the “rice bowl of Mizoram,” Champhai district is known for its agriculture alongside its natural attractions. The area around the town is predominantly Mizo Christian, and the same warmth and orderliness found across the state is present here in an unhurried border-town setting. The Zokhawthar border trading post nearby adds a distinct cross-cultural character to the region. Champhai is the base for visits to Rih Dil, Murlen National Park, and the Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary, making it essential for nature-focused travellers.

Top Attractions in Champhai

  • Rih Dil Lake: A heart-shaped lake of deep spiritual significance to the Mizo people, located just across the border inside Myanmar. Visiting requires coordination with local guides and additional permits, but the journey and the lake’s setting are unforgettable.
  • Murlen National Park: A biodiversity reserve 152 km northeast of Champhai covering 100 sq km of dense subtropical forest. Home to clouded leopards, Hoolock gibbons, serow, and a remarkable variety of orchids and ferns.
  • Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary: Adjacent to Murlen, this sanctuary rises to the highest peak in Mizoram at around 2,157 metres and offers serious trekking through forested ridges.
  • Highest Peak in Mizoram: The summit within Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary is a demanding multi-day trek and a draw for experienced hill walkers.
  • Khawhai Tlang: A viewpoint hill near Champhai offering clear views toward the Myanmar plains on the eastern side.
  • Khawhpawp Falls: A waterfall set in forested terrain within the Champhai district, worth including as part of a longer day trip from the town.

Why Visit Champhai

Champhai is the only place in Mizoram where you can stand at altitude and look out over Myanmar from Indian soil. Its combination of border geography, ancient Mizo cultural heritage tied to Rih Dil, and access to two protected wildlife areas makes it unlike anywhere else in the Northeast.

Best Time to Visit Champhai

October to February offers the clearest skies and most comfortable temperatures for the road journey from Aizawl and for trekking in Murlen and Lengteng. Temperatures at this altitude dip to around 4-8°C on winter nights, so carry warm layers. March brings the Chapchar Kut Festival across Mizoram, including in Champhai, on the first Friday of the month. The monsoon season (June-September) makes the mountain roads difficult and the trail to Murlen slippery, though the orchids are at peak bloom.

How to Reach Champhai

By Air: The nearest airport is Lengpui Airport (AJL) near Aizawl, approximately 192 km from Champhai. From the airport, shared taxis and private vehicles cover the distance in five to six hours.

By Rail: Mizoram has no active railway line. The nearest railheads are Silchar in Assam (around 370 km by road) and Bairabi in northern Mizoram. The practical route is to fly to Lengpui and drive east, or travel by bus from Silchar via Aizawl.

By Road: NH54 connects Aizawl to Champhai in approximately 192 km. The road is mountainous and takes five to six hours at a comfortable pace. State Transport buses run between Aizawl and Champhai daily. From Guwahati, the total road distance is around 820 km and typically requires an overnight stop in Aizawl.

Permit Requirements

All visitors to Mizoram, including Indian citizens from other states, must hold an Inner Line Permit (ILP). Obtain it at Mizoram House offices in Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, or Silchar, or collect one on arrival at Lengpui Airport. For visiting the Myanmar-side Rih Dil lake, an additional Border Area Permit is required and should be arranged through a registered local tour operator in Champhai. Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) from the Ministry of Home Affairs before entering Mizoram.

Nearby Destinations

Aizawl is the primary hub 192 km to the west and the natural place to begin or end a trip. Serchhip is accessible via Aizawl and offers a different character entirely, with Vantawng Falls and the Thenzawl wool-weaving village.
