About Serchhip

Serchhip is a small but strategically placed district headquarters in central Mizoram, sitting at 1,220 metres above sea level on the main highway between Aizawl and Lunglei. It lies 149 km south of Aizawl on NH306 and is the essential midpoint stop on any journey through the state’s southern reaches.

The district has the remarkable distinction of being one of the most literate in all of India, with literacy rates consistently above 98 percent across several census cycles. This is a reflection of the strong Mizo Christian tradition of community education that runs deep through every village in the region. The town is quiet, well-ordered, and surrounded by forested hill slopes that open into river valley views in several directions. While Serchhip itself is modest in scale, its surroundings are exceptional: the 308-metre Vantawng Falls is the tallest waterfall in Mizoram, located in the district; and the village of Thenzawl, 47 km further south, is one of the best places in the Northeast to see traditional Mizo handloom weaving and to play golf at altitude.

Top Attractions in Serchhip

  • Vantawng Falls: At 308 metres, this is the tallest waterfall in Mizoram and one of the tallest in Northeast India. It drops through a forested gorge with a viewpoint accessible by road and a short walk.
  • Vantawng Khawhthla: The settlement near Vantawng Falls, from which the trek to the waterfall base begins. The surrounding landscape of forested ridges is worth time in itself.
  • Vantawng Waterfall View Point: A dedicated viewpoint above the falls offering a clear aerial perspective of the cascade, accessible without a full descent into the gorge.
  • Deer Park Thenzawl: A small deer park in Thenzawl village, easily combined with a visit to the handloom centre. Home to barking deer and other small forest species.
  • Thenzawl Golf Resort: One of the highest-altitude golf courses in Mizoram, set within scenic hill terrain in Thenzawl. The resort also offers accommodation for those who want to spend a night south of Serchhip.
  • Lung Nupa: A natural rock formation of local cultural significance near Serchhip, connected to Mizo oral traditions and worth a short detour.
  • Sibuta Lung Tachhip: Another rock landmark with historical and mythological association in Mizo culture, located in the Serchhip area.

Why Visit Serchhip

Serchhip sits at the intersection of Mizoram’s most accessible waterfall, a living handloom tradition in Thenzawl, and the road south toward Lunglei. It offers a concentrated view of what makes central Mizoram distinct without requiring the longer journey deeper into the southern highlands.

Best Time to Visit Serchhip

October to February is the best window, with dry mountain air and temperatures between 8°C and 22°C. Vantawng Falls is most dramatic during and immediately after the monsoon (September-October), when water volume is highest, but the gorge trail can be slippery. For clear views and comfortable trekking, November to January is optimal. The Chapchar Kut Festival, held on the first Friday of March each year, is a colourful celebration of traditional Mizo culture that can be experienced in Serchhip and nearby villages before or after visiting Thenzawl and the falls.

How to Reach Serchhip

By Air: Lengpui Airport (AJL), near Aizawl, is approximately 149 km north of Serchhip. From the airport, the drive south on NH306 takes about three and a half to four hours.

By Rail: Mizoram has no functioning railway. The nearest railheads are Silchar in Assam (around 230 km to the northwest by road) and Bairabi in northern Mizoram. From Silchar, buses to Aizawl stop at or near Serchhip on the southern highway.

By Road: NH306 connects Aizawl to Serchhip directly in about 149 km, taking three to four hours. State Transport buses run daily between Aizawl and Lunglei, stopping at Serchhip. From Serchhip, Thenzawl is a further 47 km south and Vantawng Falls is approximately 75 km from the district headquarters.

Permit Requirements

An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is required for all visitors entering Mizoram, including Indian citizens from other states. Obtain one at Mizoram House offices in Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, or Silchar, or collect it on arrival at Lengpui Airport. The permit is checked at the Vairengte entry point on the Assam-Mizoram border and at other checkpoints along the highway south. Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) from the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi.
