About Aizawl
Aizawl is the capital of Mizoram and one of the most striking hill cities in Northeast India. Sitting at 1,132 metres above sea level, the city spreads across a series of steep parallel ridges with houses stacked on near-vertical slopes and roads that switchback up and down constantly. It is home to roughly 400,000 people and serves as the political, cultural, and commercial centre of the state.
Mizoram has one of the highest literacy rates in India, and that sense of education and civic pride is visible throughout Aizawl. The population is predominantly Christian, and the cityscape is defined by churches of every denomination rising above the rooftops. The Mizo people are known for their warmth and strong community bonds, making Aizawl one of the safest and most welcoming cities in the Northeast. It is the logical starting point for any journey through Mizoram, with direct flights from Kolkata and Guwahati landing at Lengpui Airport, 30 km away.

Why Visit Aizawl
Aizawl is the only practical entry point into Mizoram for most visitors, and it rewards time spent within the city itself. The combination of a vertically built cityscape, active church culture, excellent local food, and welcoming residents makes it genuinely interesting as a destination in its own right, not just a transit stop.
Best Time to Visit Aizawl
October to March is the best period, with dry and cool weather that makes walking the city’s steep streets comfortable. Temperatures during these months range from around 10°C at night to 22°C during the day. March is particularly worth planning around: the Chapchar Kut Festival, held on the first Friday of March, is Mizoram’s largest traditional celebration. It marks the completion of jungle clearing for jhum (slash-and-burn) cultivation and involves large-scale traditional dance, music, and costume performances across the city.
