About Ravangla

Ravangla is a small town in South Sikkim at 2,150 metres elevation, positioned on a ridge between the Rangit and Teesta river valleys. It sits about 65 km from Gangtok, making it one of the closer hub towns to the capital at roughly 2.5 hours by road. Despite its modest size, Ravangla draws a steady stream of visitors for two reasons: the Tathagata Tsal Buddha Park with its 130-foot seated Buddha statue is one of the most visually striking sites in the state, and the surrounding area includes working tea estates, active monasteries, and hot springs. The town itself is quiet and unhurried, with small guesthouses and a handful of local restaurants. South Sikkim sees less tourist traffic than Gangtok or North Sikkim, which makes Ravangla a good choice for travellers looking for a slower pace. At this elevation the climate is mild and clear for most of the year, with the monsoon being the main period to avoid for clear views.

Top Attractions in Ravangla

Tathagata Tsal (Sleeping Buddha Statue) is the centrepiece of Ravangla, a 130-foot seated Buddha constructed in 2013 on a hilltop with a landscaped garden below. The site also contains smaller shrines and a meditation hall. Buddha Park refers to the full park complex around the statue, which is well-maintained and open throughout the year. Temi Tea Garden is Sikkim’s only commercial tea estate, located about 10 km from Ravangla. Visitors can walk through the terraced tea bushes and buy freshly processed Temi tea at the estate shop. Ralong Hot Springs near Ralang Monastery offer a traditional sulphur spring in a forested setting, good for a short stop. Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary rises above Ravangla to 3,235 metres; the 5-6 hour trek to the summit is one of the best half-day hikes in South Sikkim, with views extending to Kanchenjunga on clear days. Tendong Hilltop is another forest-covered peak near Ravangla, significant in local Lepcha mythology, with walking trails through rhododendron and oak forest. Siddheshwar Dham in Namchi, about 20 km south of Ravangla, features a 33-metre Shiva statue and a replica Char Dham pilgrimage circuit, making it a major pilgrimage destination in its own right. Chopta Valley View Point between Ravangla and Temi offers sweeping valley views of the Rangit basin below.

Why Visit Ravangla

Ravangla is the most accessible South Sikkim town for travellers coming from Gangtok, and it packs a surprising range of experiences into a compact area: a world-class Buddhist monument, a working tea estate, forest treks, hot springs, and panoramic mountain views. It is also a natural stopping point on the road between Gangtok and Pelling, making it an efficient addition to any West and South Sikkim circuit.

Best Time to Visit Ravangla

Ravangla is one of the most year-round destinations in Sikkim. October to May offers clear skies and comfortable temperatures, with the Kanchenjunga range visible most mornings between October and December. March and April bring rhododendron blooms on the Maenam slopes. January and February are cold but generally dry and clear, suitable for short visits. The monsoon from June to September brings rain and mist that limits the view from the Buddha Park and makes the Maenam trek muddy, though the tea garden remains green and lush.
