About Pelling

Pelling sits at 2,085 metres in West Sikkim, about 130 km from Gangtok by road, roughly 4-5 hours depending on conditions. The town is positioned at a point where the Kanchenjunga massif fills the horizon, and on clear mornings the view from the upper part of town is genuinely striking: the world’s third-highest peak and its surrounding glaciers appear closer than they have any right to be. Pelling is not a polished resort town; it is a small Sikkimese hill station with a cluster of hotels, a few monasteries, and a concentration of heritage sites within easy reach. It serves as the hub for West Sikkim attractions, combining ancient monasteries, forest-ringed sacred lakes, Himalayan viewpoints, and the recently built Sky Walk glass bridge. The circuit from Pelling typically takes 2-3 days and can be done without any special permits for Indian visitors.

Top Attractions in Pelling

Pemayangtse Monastery is Pelling’s most significant landmark, one of the oldest and most revered Nyingma monasteries in Sikkim, set on a ridge just above town. Its three-storey structure houses ancient murals, thangkas, and a remarkable wooden model of Zangdok Palri on the top floor. A short walk downhill from Pemayangtse, the Rabdentse Ruins mark the site of Sikkim’s second royal capital, a forest-fringed hilltop with stone foundations and excellent views toward Kanchenjunga. Khecheopalri Lake is a sacred wish-granting lake about 26 km from Pelling, surrounded by prayer flags and dense forest; local legend holds that leaves never settle on its surface. Kanchenjunga National Park covers a vast stretch of high-altitude wilderness in the region, accessible through Yuksom, which is itself reachable from Pelling. Sky Walk Pelling is a glass-bottomed bridge and walkway near the Pelling Helipad viewpoint, offering vertigo-inducing views over the valley below. Yuksom, 35 km from Pelling, is Sikkim’s first capital and the starting point for the Dzongri-Goechha La trekking route; it is worth a day trip. The Pelling Ropeway connects Upper Pelling to Bhaledhunga and offers a bird’s-eye view of the Himalayan foothills. Bhaleydhunga at the lower ropeway station is a quiet spot with a small Shiva temple and river below.

Why Visit Pelling

Pelling provides the closest unobstructed views of Kanchenjunga from any road-accessible town in Sikkim. The monastery-ruins-lake circuit concentrated within a 30 km radius makes it one of the most rewarding cultural and natural day-trip hubs in the northeast. For trekkers, it is also the closest base with hotel infrastructure to the Kanchenjunga National Park trailheads at Yuksom.

Best Time to Visit Pelling

March to May is the best season, when rhododendrons bloom on the forest slopes and skies are clear enough for full Kanchenjunga views. October and November are equally good for clarity, with cooler temperatures and post-monsoon greenery. December to February can be cold and foggy, with occasional snow at higher points around town. The monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain that can close roads temporarily, though the monastery circuit remains accessible most days.

No permits are needed for Pelling or its immediate circuit, including Pemayangtse, Rabdentse, and Khecheopalri Lake. The Kanchenjunga National Park trek through Yuksom requires forest permits, which are obtained locally at Yuksom.

No special permit is required for Indian nationals visiting Pelling and its surrounding attractions, including Pemayangtse Monastery, Rabdentse Ruins, and Khecheopalri Lake. Foreign nationals visiting West Sikkim must carry their passport; no PAP is required for Pelling itself but restricted inner zones near the border require prior clearance. For trekking into Kanchenjunga National Park from Yuksom, forest department permits are mandatory for all visitors and must be arranged at Yuksom.
