About Ziro
Ziro Valley sits at about 5,500 ft in the Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh, 115 km north of the state capital Itanagar. It is home to the Apatani tribe, a community nominated to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage for their sophisticated paddy-cum-fish farming system, which transforms the valley floor into a mosaic of green terraced fields connected by irrigation channels. The Apatani number around 60,000 people and live in a cluster of seven villages in and around the valley. Older Apatani women are identifiable by their traditional facial tattoos and large nose plugs, applied in earlier generations as a cultural practice. The valley is surrounded by dense pine forests and the distant Arunachal Himalaya. Every September, the Ziro Music Festival brings independent musicians from across India and abroad to outdoor stages in the valley, turning this remote spot into one of India’s most beloved music events. The combination of landscape, living culture, and the festival makes Ziro one of the most rewarding destinations in northeast India.

Top Attractions in Ziro
The Apatani Village Circuit is the essential experience in Ziro. The seven Apatani villages, including Hong, Hari, Hija, Bamin-Michi, Mudang-Tage, Dutta, and Lempia, are all within walking or cycling distance of each other. Walking through the villages in the early morning, when farmers are heading to the paddy fields, gives the most authentic experience of daily Apatani life.
The Ziro Valley paddy fields are at their most photogenic from June to September when the rice is growing, creating a green patchwork across the valley floor. The fish-in-paddy farming method, where fish are raised simultaneously in the flooded fields, is an ancient agricultural technique used nowhere else in exactly this form.
Seeh Lake (also called Birii Lake) is a forested lake near the town of Ziro, a short walk through pine trees that makes a peaceful afternoon outing. The area around the lake is good for birdwatching, with several Himalayan forest species present.
Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, about 26 km from Ziro, protects a large tract of forest in a high-altitude bowl at around 3,000 metres. Access requires a Forest Department permit and is best attempted with a local guide. The sanctuary is one of the few places in Arunachal Pradesh where red pandas have been consistently recorded.
Kardo Hill above the valley town of Hapoli is a short hike with a good view over the paddy fields and surrounding forested ridges. Ziro Putu viewpoint on the opposite side of the valley offers the widest panoramic angle across the entire Ziro landscape.
The Ziro Music Festival takes place over four days in late September (usually the last weekend). It features indie, folk, and electronic artists on multiple stages. Camping in the valley during the festival is an experience entirely different from any other music event in India.
Why Visit Ziro
Ziro offers the rarest combination in northeast India: a living indigenous cultural landscape that is both photogenic and intellectually engaging, set inside a genuinely beautiful mountain valley. The Apatani farming system is not a museum exhibit but an active, daily practice. The Ziro Music Festival adds a layer of contemporary culture that brings the valley to life for a completely different audience. No other hub city in Arunachal Pradesh offers this breadth.
Best Time to Visit Ziro
September is the peak month, timed with the Ziro Music Festival (book accommodation months in advance for this period). The paddy is at full green growth in September, making the valley landscape most striking.
March to May is the second best window: mild temperatures (10-22 degrees Celsius), clear skies, and the valley is accessible without festival crowds. October is excellent for post-festival visits with good weather and pleasant walking conditions.
Avoid July and August for access from Itanagar, as landslides on the approach road are common during peak monsoon. December to February is cold (down to 5 degrees at night) but peaceful and largely crowd-free.

All Indian nationals require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Ziro and any part of Arunachal Pradesh. Apply online at arunachalpradesh.gov.in or at Arunachal Pradesh Liaison Offices in Guwahati, Delhi, Kolkata, or Shillong. The ILP is free and processes within 1-2 business days; apply at least 3 days before travel. Carry both printed and digital copies.
For the Ziro Music Festival, the ILP process is the same but plan further ahead, as accommodation books up quickly. Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) from the Ministry of Home Affairs in addition to a valid Indian visa; apply through a registered tour operator 3-4 weeks before travel.
