About Lachen

Lachen is a village in North Sikkim at approximately 2,750 metres elevation, lying 133 km from Gangtok along the Lachen Chu river valley. The drive from Gangtok takes 5-6 hours on mountain roads that cut through dense forest and past cascading waterfalls. Lachen itself is a compact settlement of stone houses, a wooden monastery, yak herders, and a handful of guesthouses catering almost entirely to trekkers and permit-holding travellers heading to Gurudongmar Lake. The landscape shifts dramatically as you gain altitude: the lower valley is covered in rhododendron forest, while the terrain above Thangu opens into high-altitude meadows and bare plateau that feel distinctly Tibetan. Lachen is the mandatory overnight stop before the early-morning drive to Gurudongmar Lake at 17,800 ft, one of the highest accessible lakes in the world. The village has basic but adequate accommodation, and the nights are cold even in summer, so pack warm layers regardless of the season you visit.

Top Attractions in Lachen

Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary lies between Lachen and Lachung, accessible via Chungthang. From late March to late May the sanctuary erupts with red, pink, and white rhododendron blooms across dozens of species, and it is one of the best floral displays in the entire eastern Himalaya. Gurudongmar Lake at 17,800 ft is the primary draw for nearly all visitors to Lachen; the lake is sacred to both Buddhists and Sikhs, partially frozen for much of the year, and surrounded by bare brown mountains at the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. The drive to Gurudongmar passes through Thangu Valley, a broad high-altitude meadow at around 3,600 metres that is beautiful in summer when yaks graze the green grass. Chopta Valley, reached via a side road from Thangu, is a stunning alpine bowl with a small seasonal settlement and views toward the Tibetan border. Lachen Monastery, the village’s own gompa, is a small but active Nyingma monastery worth a visit on arrival. The surrounding forest trails near the village are good for short walks in spring and autumn.

Why Visit Lachen

Lachen is the only practical overnight base for Gurudongmar Lake, one of India’s most remote and visually dramatic high-altitude destinations. Beyond the lake, the Thangu and Chopta valleys offer a sense of Himalayan wilderness that is difficult to find at road-accessible points elsewhere in Northeast India. The combination of rhododendron forests below and stark high-altitude plateaus above gives Lachen a landscape range that few single villages can match.

Best Time to Visit Lachen

March to May is the prime season, combining rhododendron blooms in the lower valleys with clear skies over Gurudongmar Lake before the summer haze builds. April and May are peak months when both the rhododendrons and the high-altitude roads are at their best. October is the other recommended window, with post-monsoon clarity and fewer crowds. November brings cold and early snowfall that can close the Gurudongmar road. The monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain at lower elevations and cloud cover that limits views at the lake, though the route remains open most days. January and February are very cold, with Gurudongmar regularly inaccessible due to snowfall.

The PAP must be obtained through a registered Sikkim travel agent before departure from Gangtok; it cannot be obtained at the checkposts. A minimum group of two people is required for the permit. Note that Aadhar Card is not accepted as a valid identity document for the PAP application; carry a valid passport, voter ID, or driving licence. Foreign nationals also require a PAP for North Sikkim and must travel with a registered guide.

Most organised North Sikkim tours combine Lachen and Lachung over 5-6 days, staying one or two nights at each. Gangtok is the departure and return point for all North Sikkim circuits, with permit arrangements made there.
