About Bomdila
Bomdila is a hill town at around 8,000 ft in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, positioned directly on the NH-13 corridor between Tezpur and Tawang. Most travellers arrive here after a 4-5 hour drive from Tezpur via Bhalukpong, and spend the night before continuing to the Sela Pass and Tawang the following day. The town is compact and easy to explore on foot, with three Buddhist gompas, a craft centre, and views of the Eastern Himalayas on clear mornings. The surrounding hills produce excellent apples and kiwis, and the market sells locally made Monpa textiles and prayer items. At its altitude, Bomdila is noticeably cooler than the Brahmaputra plains, which makes the overnight stay an important acclimatisation step before crossing the Sela Pass at 13,700 ft.

Top Attractions in Bomdila
Bomdila Monastery is the most visited site in town. The main gompa complex includes the Upper Gompa, Middle Gompa, and Lower Gompa, each at different points on the hillside. The Upper Gompa has the most impressive prayer hall, decorated with Thangka paintings and housing a large gilded Buddha statue.
Bomdila Pass sits just above the town and offers one of the best viewpoints in the region on clear days, with the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas visible to the north.
The Craft Centre run by the state government sells handmade carpets, Thangka paintings, cane and bamboo goods, and Monpa woollen items. It is one of the few reliable places in Arunachal Pradesh to buy authentic local handicrafts.
The Bomdila War Memorial near the market area commemorates soldiers from the 1962 conflict. Apple orchards on the outskirts of town are open to visitors during the harvest season from August to October.
Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary is about 60 km south of Bomdila and is one of India’s premier birdwatching sites, with over 500 species recorded. It is accessible as a day trip from Bomdila with advance permits.
Why Visit Bomdila
Bomdila is the practical base for birders heading to Eaglenest, and the cultural introduction to Monpa Buddhist traditions before reaching Tawang. The three-gompa circuit is unique in Arunachal Pradesh and takes only a morning to complete. The town is also the most comfortable acclimatisation stop on the entire Tawang highway.
Best Time to Visit Bomdila
March to May is the most comfortable period, with mild temperatures around 15-20 degrees Celsius, clear Himalayan views, and rhododendrons in bloom on the surrounding hillsides. October and November are also excellent: post-monsoon clarity, apple harvest, and pleasant hiking conditions.
Avoid July and August when the road from Bhalukpong frequently suffers landslides. December to February is cold (near zero at night) but the town remains accessible and less crowded.
